Existing problem in management of SCD
The various problems are Inadequate epidemiology data:Non availability of Sickle cell infrastructure: for diagnosis ,screening ,counselling & treatment at hospitals, Lack of medical awareness: Amongst general population, Inability To Afford Medicine: (Folic acid- Rs.30/month, Hydroxyurea- Rs 500/month).Besides this there is lack of adequate knowledge of management of sickle cell disease amongst doctors managing these patients. There is no infrastructure for research activity in sickle cell disease.
In view of these deficiencies Odisha Sickle Cell Project was submitted by Dr. D .K. Patel to NHM Odisha in 2009. Following detail discussion with the health authorities the project was granted in April 2010 for a period of 2 years till March 2012.The Project has been extended till 2015 & 6 new districts namely Angul, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada & Sonepur have been included.
